The championship will be held at two venues — St Stephen’s College and the Khalsa College courts. The North versus East event will precede the all-India event, said JS Naruka, Director of Sports, Delhi University.
As in the previous year DU, riding on the strength of the Bhambri sisters, are expected to retain the title that the varsity won at the all-India meet in Mangalore. Sudharshan Patak, the organising secretary of this year’s meet, sounded confident of yet another title in the women’s section for DU.
“They are the most experienced and have been on the circuit. Hopefully, they will help us with one more title this year,” she said.
As for the men’s title, Naruka said the task was not that easy. “There have been good teams from different varsities and it is tough to predict the winners. DU, too, has a good team but the performance on each day will count,” said Naruka refusing to predict this year’s winners.
He also said that DU, which was to host the men’s event as well, has shared it with Jiwaji University, Gwalior, at the behest of the Madhya Pradesh varsity's request. “Since the Jiwaji University approached us, showing interest in hosting the event, we let them do so.” Naruka said that the other members of the DU girls team were vigorously practising for the February-March event. “Unlike the Bhambri sisters, the other girls need to be on their toes,” he added.
