With the enforcement of the code of conduct, tired MC contractors have heaved a sigh of relief. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, many tenders were called in the last two months.
Although there are more than 300 contractors in the city, they have their hands full and are not able to cope up with the present work pressure. Most of them got their projects under the Sangat Darshan programmes.
The MC staff too, is busy with various foundation-laying ceremonies lined up for the coming weeks. Two days ago, tenders worth Rs 80 crore had been called and they had been awarded to contractors in a hush-hush manner.
On an average, even a small contractor has been given work of more than Rs 2 crore without sufficient manpower to complete the work. “To start the works before the Lok Sabha elections is an election gimmick so as to show the people that the government is very much concerned about the development of the city, but in reality most of the works have not even been started as yet,” said Amrit Varsha Rampal, deputy leader of opposition in the municipal corporation. The projects, which are awaiting a nod despite their approval include: Brick pavement works in 216 unapproved colonies which was announced with much fanfare but work was started only in a few colonies, repair of roads in Dugri, sewer-laying works in a number of colonies in the inner city. At least with no more tenders, contractors will now be concentrating on their present jobs.
