With no money for cremation, man abandons wife’s body

Fatehgarh Sahib, February 25 In a shocking incident, a husband abandoned the body of his pregnant wife at an isolated place in the city, as he had no money for cremation. The police have registered a case under 174 of the CrPc and are awaiting the postmortem report.

Police said the woman, identified as Jamuna Devi, a migrant rag-picker, died at her shack in a temporary quarter near Civil Hospital after excessive bleeding. She was later cremated here today and is survived by two sons aged 3 and 6 respectively and a 2-year-old daughter. Senior police officials told Newsline that the body was found near Defence Bandh No 2 on Sunday morning. “The woman was eight months pregnant. Her body was wrapped in a torn blanket and had blood stains all across,” a senior police officers said.

Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Kaustabh Sharma, who visited the spot, stated prima facie there were no external injury marks on the body. Following investigations, the police managed to round up the husband of the deceased, identifies as Ram Kumar Yadav. “ Yadav revealed Devi was not well for the last 10 days and passed away at their temporary shelter,” police said.

“The family is extremely poor and had to go without food for days. During investigations, their neighbours told us that the financial condition of the family was unstable and they were solely dependant on daily earnings,” Sharma said.

Meanwhile, Fatehgarh Sahib DC Ashok Singla said the administration would make sure that the children of the couple were well taken care of at an NGO. “In case the husband is not ready to take responsibility of the children, we would make necessary arrangements,” he said.
