Kanpur, February 8 Four contract killers fired at a typist in broad daylight, while he was sitting outside the Kanpur Development Authority office in Swaroop Nagar this morning. Although the typist, Harendra Bhaduaria, escaped unhurt, the locals managed to grab one of the accused and handed him over to the police.

Harendra Bhaduaria is the main witness in the murder case of his brother Raman. One of the accused in the case, Prince alias Ahmad, is serving time in jail, while another accused Harjeet Singh alias Rinku is absconding.

Bhaduaria told The Indian Express that Raman was murdered by the duo on May 1, 2006, following a property dispute. Since then, Harjeet had been warning him of dire consequences if he did not withdraw his name from the witness list.

Narrating the incident, he said he was typing a letter outside the KDA office when four motorcycle-borne men stopped at the office gate and fired a shot at him. “They fired again when the first shot missed its mark, but I managed to run away and shouted for help,” he added.

Hearing the commotion, some local people and staff from the KDA and Kanpur Nagar Nigam started chasing the assailants. Three of them managed to escape while one of them scaled the boundary wall and jumped into the compound of KDA Vice-Chairman Mohammed Mustafa’s home. The crowd and Mustafa’s guards caught him and handed him over to the Swaroop Nagar police.

Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Swaroop said the man, Dharmendra alias Adesh, had come with his accomplices from Lucknow. They had been given Rs 20,000 and a pistol to get rid of Bhaduaria. The SSP said they have recovered the pistol and are interrogating the accused.
