The witnesses included fishermen from the Colaba colony and the Badhwar Park where the terrorists are believed to have landed. The witnesses went to the morgue where all the bodies have been kept since the attack. The identification procedure was carried out over Monday and Tuesday under tight security.
“All the witnesses were men,” a source said.
The terrorists’ bodies were kept in a room with those of others. “Fifteen bodies were in the room and witnesses were asked to pick out those of the terrorists,” said the source.
“We had earlier recorded the statements of the witnesses from all places that were attacked. Based on the statements, we asked them to come and identify the bodies. They all came voluntarily,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
Earlier this month, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram announced that DNA samples had been taken from all nine slain terrorists.
The bodies of eight — Hafeez Arshad alias Bada Abdul Rehman, Javed alias Abu Ali, Shoaib alias Soheb and Nazeer alias Abu Umer (at Taj Hotel), Nasir alias Abu Umar, Babar Imran alias Abu Akasha (who attacked Jewish Community Centre in Nariman house), Abdul Rehman Chota and Fahadullah (who attacked Oberoi Hotel) — have been kept at the morgue since the attack. The ninth body, that of Ismail Khan alias Abu Ismail, who attacked the commuters at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and was later gunned down near Chowpatty, was shifted to JJ Hospital from B Y L Nair Hospital a few days later.
