Rajkot Usha Parmar (30) is the sole breadwinner for her family of five. On Saturday, she reportedly attempted suicide, as she couldn’t feed her three children and ailing husband.

The police said Parmar was taken to the Rajkot Civil Hospital after she consumed pesticide. On Sunday, however, she went missing from the hospital and was still untraceable when reports last came in.

This is the second such incident in just over a month in Rajkot where unavailability of food grains has become a serious concern.

While preliminary police investigation has revealed that the woman tried to end her life after having failed to provide for her family, it has also come to light that Parmar even took to bootlegging of desi liquor to earn her livelihood. But on Sunday, Parmar went missing from the hospital.

“She has claimed that she had no food to feed her three children and ill husband. But she has also confessed to her involvement in bootlegging,” said New Thorala police.

According to reports, Parmar shouldered the responsibility of her family after Bhupat, her husband, could no longer work due to appendicitis.

On Sunday, however, Parmar left the hospital without informing the authorities. “She has left the hospital. Authorities reported the matter to us this morning,” said a policeman from Hospital Chowky.

The family members were not found at their residence as well. The police have begun their investigation.

Earlier on February 3, a couple, Maqbool Fakir and his wife Shabnam, had attempted suicide after staying hungry for three days. After the incident, they received immediate help from the local district supply office that assured them of 10 kg of food grains supply for six months.
