Kolkata Two persons — a 50-year-old woman and a child — were killed when BSF jawans opened fire on a group of villagers at Tufanganj block in Cooch Behar district on Tuesday.

Three persons were also injured in the incident. They have been admitted to the Cooch Behar Hospital with bullet injuries.

The incident broke out when some villagers of Sialpara-Nakatiganj tried to cross the border in the morning for grazing cattle on no-man’s land. According to locals, the villagers do this regularly at the India-Bangladesh border.

According to a police source, BSF jawans stopped the villagers when they were crossing the border for allegedly smuggling cattle to Bangladesh. An altercation took place between the villagers and the jawans, following which the jawans opened fire on them.

“We have taken up the matter with the BSF. It is a very unfortunate thing. We don’t know who is to be blamed for the incident. The police will investigate into the whole matter and fix responsibility,” Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh told The Indian Express.

Superintendent of Police, Cooch Behar Kalyan Banerjee said they have received complaints from the locals against the BSF. “The villagers are quite agitated over the matter and they have lodged a complaint against the BSF unit. The BSF fired six rounds on the crowd. Senior officers of the BSF and the police went to the site to make an assessment of the situation,” Banerjee said. A police picket has been stationed in the area.
