No doctor or nurse arrived at the spot, hardly a few yards from the nearest ward.
Shushma Devi (22) was there for a routine ENT check-up along with her family members, all of whom are hearing and speech impaired, except her father-in-law, Kunj Bihari.
While she was waiting for her father-in-law to bring some food, she suddenly went into labour.
The onlookers informed the medical staff, but it took the latter 40 minutes to arrive. But by then, Sushma had already delivered the baby.
When Bihari came back, he approached the doctors for help but none came to his aid. He then arranged a rickshaw to take Sushma to the nearby Queen Mary Hospital. Only then was the hospital staff galvanised into action.
“We reacted as soon as the information about the lady reached us,” said Dr S K Agarwal, the vice-chancellor of the University.
