Ahmedabad, October 13 The husband of a 27-year-old woman, who died during childbirth at a maternity home in Saraspur on Sunday, has alleged that she died due to negligence on the part of the doctor. Though the Shaherkotda police have registered a case of accidental death, they are waiting for the postmortem report to decide the future course of action in the case.

The deceased has been identified as Yogita Chauhan, a resident of Arvind Mill ni Chali in the Saraspur area. Her husband, Ajit Chauhan (28) — a garment exporter, has accused Dr Bharat Atit of negligence. The doctor runs a maternity home at Desai ni Pol in Saraspur and is the husband of former mayor of Ahmedabad, Maliniben Atit.

According to the police, Yogita was eight months pregnant when she was admitted to Dr Atit’s hospital on Saturday night after she complained of stomach pain. Later, the doctor performed a caesarean operation on her. The child died during the operation and Yogita's condition too deteriorated, after which she was referred to the Shardaben Hospital, where she died on Sunday.

Inspector D G Gohil said: “We have registered a case of accidental death and have got the postmortem done. Now, we are waiting for the report. If there is anything which suggests that the woman died due to the negligence of the doctor, we’ll register a case against him under provisions of the IPC. We cannot register a case unless we have some medical evidence against him.”
