Pune Relatives allege harassment, husband beaten up, cops also suffer injuries

Relatives of a woman who committed suicide attacked Sangvi police station and tried to set it on fire on Saturday morning. The police had to fire a bullet in air for controlling the situation. Three policemen, including a police sub inspector from the Sangvi police station, were injured in the incident.

Varsha Pritam Dhore, 28, a housewife from Old Sangvi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad, had allegedly hanged herself at her residence on Friday. The Sangvi police had detained her husband Pritam for interrogations on Friday night.

On Saturday morning, around 30 persons — including the parents and other family members of Varsha — went to Sangvi police station alleging that she committed suicide following harassment by her husband and in-laws.

Pritam was also present at the police station. On spotting him, Varsha’s family members started beating him. The angry mob also attacked the cops who tried to intervene. A few of Varsha’s relatives threw stones at the police station while some of them took up kerosene bottles for setting the police station on fire. With no options left, assistant sub inspector Anna Chombre fired a bullet in the air, after which the mob calmed down.

However, police sub inspector R S Kadu, constables B D Zurange and S D Kashid suffered injuries in the incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Mahesh Patil rushed to Sangvi police station while additional forces were pressed into service.

“The situation was going out of control,” Patil said. “Besides the policemen, Pritam Dhore also suffered injuries. All of them have been sent to YCM Hospital in Pimpri for treatment,” he said.

The police have arrested three persons and detained 10 persons in connection with the incident. The mob had also ransacked Pritam’s house.

Pritam and Varsha had married some two years ago. Varsha’s family members alleged that Pritam and her in-laws had been demanding money. Police said a complaint of abetting suicide would be lodged against Pritam and his parents.
