According to the Chorwad town police, Devi Jagu Chavda (45) and Kanu alias Ravji Parmar (37), had badly beaten up Devi’s husband, Jagu, with batons on February 14. On February 19, five days after the incident, Devi lodged a complaint with the police alleging her brothers-in-law Balu and Naran of physically assaulting Jagu. A day later, on February 20, Jagu was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
On the basis of Devi’s complaint, a case was registered under Section 323 (physical assault) against Balu and Naran. The police arrested the two on February 25. Though the deceased was found dead under mysteries circumstances, investigating officers, assistant sub-inspectors P A Kathad and H I Khan didn’t probe the matter, and were subsequently suspended. On February 2, Sub-Inspector N B Joshi took charge and reinvestigated the matter, which revealed it to be a case of murder; the accused being none other than Devi and Kanu.
The two were detained on February 3. They admitted to the crime and also produced the murder weapons. Inspector Joshi said: “The accused have admitted to the crime. The police will now submit a detailed report in court, which will decided the fate of the two brothers who were arrested earlier.”
The two accused have been arrested under section 302 (murder) and 114 (helping in committing crime) of the IPC. They were produced before the judicial magistrate first class court in Veraval city, which sent them in judicial custody in Veraval jail.
