Additional Sessions Judge R M Patel also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Reshma Gurnani, the convict, a resident of Hari Darshan Flats in Kuber Nagar area of the city.
Besides, she will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of one year in case of default in paying the fine.
The victim has been identified as Dhanvanti Gurnani (71).
According to the details of the case, Reshma was married to the deceased’s son, Kantilal. The couple lived in a separate unit on the same flat along with their three daughters. Reshma was, however, unhappy with Dhanvanti’s approach towards her, owing to certain personal family reasons. She had certain grievances against her.
On September 15, 2007, Reshma killed Dhanvanti with an axe, with the help of a 14-year-old girl from the same apartment.
The Sardarnagar police had investigated the case.
Public prosecutor Nilkanth Trivedi said: “Initially, Reshma denied all the charges against her. However, the accused minor girl spilled the beans during her statement before the court and explained the entire turn of events of the gruesome murder.”
Trivedi examined 16 witnesses and 20 documents, including the blood samples on the axe, which was used in the crime, and which matched with the blood of Dhanvanti during the trial of the case.
According to Trivedi, the co-accused girl in the case has been sent to an observation home in the Khanpur area.
Pronouncing the judgment, the court said the punishment is needed to set a deterrent in society, where a minor grudge between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law led to such a gruesome murder.
