Khanna Geeta, 20, was allegedly set ablaze by her husband on Sunday evening near the Samrala Road area.

City police station SHO Rajesh Kumar said, “Geeta has received 35-40 percent burn injuries. Sub-divisional judicial magistrate R K Berri has also recorded the victim’s statement at the civil hospital.” A case was registered against Geeta’s husband, Roop Singh, who later arrested.

The victim’s father, Mor Singh, told the police, “Geeta was married to Roop Singh four years ago. A waiter, he used to harass my daughter and demand more dowry.”

Geeta said, “On Sunday night, Roop Singh came home drunk and demanded food. As I got late due to some reason, Roop Singh doused me in kerosene oil and set me afire.”

Geeta added, “I ran out for help when my neighbour Sukhdev Singh put water on me.” She was then rushed to the civil hospital. The couple was living in a slum near the railway overbridge at Samrala Road.
