Kolkata A 35-year-old woman immolated herself and her two daughters after she had a heated argument with her mother-in-law in the Behrampore police station area late on Friday night.

Promila Dey first poured kerosene on her daughters — Saraswati (9) and Lakshmi (10) ¿ and set them on fire at the roof of her house. She then did the same thing to herself. Her husband Tapan Dey, a truck driver, was not present in the house when the incident occurred.

Later, angry neighbours beat up the mother-in-law and the sister-in-law of Promila, both of whom were present in the house when the incident occurred. The locals alleged that while Promila was setting herself and her kids on fire, the duo had shut the door and were busy having their dinner, instead of trying to stop the mishap or let the neighbours enter the house.

Both the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law have been arrested. Promila’s family alleged that their daughter had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment by her in-laws for quite sometime now.
