SAPNA BHAVNANI
She isn’t your average hair stylist, Sapna is also synonymous with non-conformism. Wacky and bright, Sapna’s hero is her mother Jamna Bhavnani. “My mother was widowed when she was just 37. It was really difficult for her to get on without my father, especially since she came from a traditional school of thought. But all through this she remained strong. She travelled and did a lot of good work with underprivileged children. I owe everything to her.”
SHAHNAZ HUSSAIN
From by-lane retailers to beauty giants, there isn’t a beauty boutique in the world that doesn’t stock her mixes. She can solely be credited for putting India on the world’s beauty map. And according to Shahnaz, her hero is Indira Gandhi. “I’m really touched by her love for the country. She was a very resilient woman especially during personal tragedies. I wish to remember that it was her dream that the Indian woman be at par with men.”
SUCHITRA PILLAI
Independent and feisty, Suchitra Pillai doesn’t suffer from glamourexia. The Malayali girl has paved the way for many dusky faces in an industry obsessed with milky epithelium cells. Suchitra pulled herself together after a failed marriage and went on to not only make a name for herself but also found love in Lars Kjeldsen. The couple now has a four-month-old daughter Annika and in her words “life couldn’t be better”. Former supermodel Madhu Sapre is Suchitra’s best friend and also her inspiration. “Despite her professional constraints Madhu lays a lot of emphasis on her marriage. Clearly, for her family comes first. She’s married to an Italian, and it’s a challenge to make another country your home.”
