Chandigarh, October 06 A three-day conference on social and economic issues starts at CII

Wordzmu ‘08, a three-day conference on social and economic issues, was inaugurated at the CII on Monday.

More than 200 students from different schools all over the country have come to participate in the event, which is organised every year by WORDZ Debating Society.

The inaugural function of WORDZ was held at St Stephen’s School. Union Minister of State for finance Pawan Kumar Bansal was the chief guest on the occasion.

On the first day of the conference, students from states like Haryana, Punjab and far-flung areas including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, brainstormed to find solutions to prevailing international problems.

The students will talk about subjects like prevention of outer space arms race, nuclear waste management to strengthening of women and children rights and unrest in Darfur.

Explaining the concept of WORDZ, Atin Batra, Secretary General of the WORDZ, said: “It is like a mock UN Assembly where countries are represented by the participants. The agenda is covered over three committees namely General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council. We will focus on problems that concern the entire world and not limited to a particular community or country.”

The event provides a big platform to students to put forth their views in front of a large crowd.

“It is a good opportunity to sharpen one’s public speaking skills. Apart from this, WORDZ also provides students exposure regarding the debating expression. In today’s time, it is very essential that students command good power of expression,” said Ashmita, Vice-President of WORDZ.
