The workshop was organised by the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Asia Centre in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development.
Speaking on the occasion, Raj K Mishra, regional director, CYP Asia Centre said: “Judging by the level of enthusiasm of the participants, the objective with which the workshop was organised seems to have been fulfilled. We feel confident that these young men and women will go back and work effectively towards peace building in their respective countries.”
The keynote address of the workshop was delivered by Dr Pramod Kumar who informed the participants about the meaning, factors contributing to and relevance of peace building in present day context. They were also told about the instruments and methodologies of conflict resolution and the role of youth in using and developing the same.
The delegates engaged in various group exercises and evolved their own meanings of conflict from the political, social, economic and ethnic point of view. The participants also shared their experiences and case studies of best practices adopted by their respective nations in the field of dialogue, mediation and negotiation. Post-conflict peace building and the role of youth in rehabilitation and reintegration was also discussed.
Sharing his story with the workshop, Ibrahim Hamza Khaleel from the Maldives said, “It has been a wonderful learning experience. The idea of getting together young people from different countries is novel. The resource persons in the workshop added to our existing knowledge and understanding. It is fascinating to see such variety of people co-existing here in one country.”
Shyamala Johthi P Tambusamy Pillay from Malaysia said, “The workshop was really prolific and we learnt a lot especially in the idea-sharing sessions. We were very impressed by the post-conflict and peace-keeping solutions.”
