World Yoga competition begins in Surat

Surat, February 22 The World Yoga Competition kicked off in the city on Friday. Over 170 participants from across India as well as international participants from the UK, the US, Canada, Taiwan, Slovakia, Mauritius and Nepal have arrived in the city to participate in the three-day competition. From Gujarat, only 70 players are participating.

Earlier in the day, Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, Swami Rajarshi Muniji of Life Mission and BJP spokesperson I K Jadeja inaugurated the event at the Din Dayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium.

Students from different schools in the city attended the inaugural function and enjoyed the performance of the participants. A Bharat Natyam dance was also performed by the Kalashree group on the occasion.

After the inaugural function, an under-15 competition was conducted wherein 35 players from all over the country, including seven from the state, participated.

Dr. R J Jadeja General Secretary of Yoga Cultural Association of Gujarat, said, “Each participant performed six asans within the given time limit, and they were judged by the experts.”

The names of first three winners will be declared late at night. An event 'musical' Yoga competition has also been organised. Jadeja said, on Saturday, there would be a competition for the above 15 and under-35 category, while on Sunday, the prizes will be distributed at an award ceremony. “The winners will be given the awards by Swami Rajarshi Munji. The participants will be given mementoes,” he said.
