Kolkata Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has written letters to both Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state which has claimed several lives.

A top government official confirmed to The Indian Express that in his letter that reached Kolkata two days ago, the Union Home Minister has said that he was worried about the law and order situation and urged the two leaders to work together to stop the violence.

The letters were apparently shot off after Chidambaram received a report from a three-member Central team which visited West Bengal early this month to assess the law- and-order situation there.

Sources said Chidambaram is understood to have asked Bhattacharjee to tighten security and stop clashes between Left and Trinamool Congress supporters in different parts of the state.

The central team, headed by Additional Secretary (Naxal Management) D R S Choudhary, was sent following demands by Mamata Banerjee as her party has been claiming that there has been “complete breakdown of law and order”.

The team held meetings with senior officers of the state administration and visited a few violence-hit places during their three-day tour.

Asked about the letter, chief secretary Asok Mohan Chakbarti said: “The letter (to the CM) might have come but I am not aware of it.”

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee said: “I am not aware of any letter written by Chidambaram (to Mamata). I will have to check.” With PTI inputs

Chidambaram's appeal. by Dr.Ujjal.K.Pal on 24 Dec 2009

P.Chidambaram has rightly appealed to both Didi and CM to see to that voilence's stopped. Now it's of no use to blame each other for violence taking place around.Unless all parties sit together and take resolution that violence must be stopped, violence'll continue and list of lives lost will burgeon. Now setting aside all differences, Didi should particpate in all party meet at least to save some people's lives.
