Nursing a wound he sustained during the terror attacks in Mumbai, Captain Amitendra Kumar Singh, received a call to inform him that he had been selected for the Shaurya Chakra, a military award for bravery. “The award is not part of those given on the Republic Day and will be given to me at a ceremony later. It feels great,” said Singh at his Race Course residence in Lucknow. He was part of the National Security Group (NSG) contingent that flew from New Delhi to Mumbai and helped rescue guests occupying 33 rooms on each of the three floors of the Oberoi Hotel.
A grenade splinter flew into his face, hitting near the eye during the encounter with terrorists and caused an injury that could have blinded him. Efforts of doctors saved him from such ill-fate but the splinter, 7x6 mm in size, remains lodged on the optical nerve and will be removed when the wound has healed. A pass-out of Army Public School, Lucknow, Singh feels proud he got the opportunity every soldier hankers for to save national pride.
