“We have started the work of installing the T5 tube lights at all our stations, which would help us in energy conservation. The T5 new technology tube lights consumes around 28 watt as compared to the older tube lights which consumed 40 watt of electricity,” said Shriniwas Mudgerikar, chief spokesperson, CR. “The new tube lights would also give more light as it has reflectors.”
The CR, which has undertaken the job of replacing the old tube lights, has plans to fit 4,500 tube lights, of which 3555 has already been replaced. “We should soon complete the remaining work,” Mudgerikar added.
In its Mumbai divisions, the WR plans to fit 20,000 new T5 lights and 5000 CFL tube lights in its offices, loco sheds and workshops. “Of this, we have replaced 10,000 T5 tube lights and 2,850 CFL tube lights and bulbs in offices and other railway premises. With this, we plan to save 3 million units per year,” said Gajanan Mahaputkar, spokesperson, WR.
But the new energy saving tube lights come for a higher price. “The T5 tubes costs around Rs 750 as compared to the older version which was around Rs 500. But, they are more durable and better looking. In addition, the new tube lights glow instantly unlike the conventional tube lights,” said Mudgerikar.
