Mumbai, February 16 After raising the height of the platforms, the Western Railways (WR) now plans to raise the height of the platform roofs by 10-20 centimeters at 75 locations on WR. “This is an attempt to prevent damage to train roofs and overhead equipment wires,” say WR officials.

According to a senior WR official, a committee reviewed the height of the roofs following which a detailed report comprising roof top measurements of all the stations was given to the administrative department.

“As per the report, there are places where infringement to size of dimensions exist which can result in damage to rolling stock and overhead equipment wires. It sometimes also cause accidents,” says the official.

However, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of WR, Satyaprakash refuted the claims made by the report and said, “These roofs were constructed after taking accurate dimensions. There have been no cases of damage because of the height of the roof tops.”

When inquired about the commencement of the work to raise the roof height by 10-20 cms, Satyaprakash said, “Repairs are undertaken on a regular basis. Their is no major repair work that needs to be undertaken. Whenever our workers come across any problem, we get it repaired.”

However, according to a senior WR official, at Grant road station, the roof top is very low and can hit the EMU or cause damage to the overhead equipment wire.

“The roof height will be reduced by some centimeters. Different stations have different requirements. There are 28 stations on WR out of which 75 locations need to undergo repairs,” the official says.

However, the Chief Public Relation Officer of WR, Pranay Prabhakar, too maintained that no damages have been caused because of roof tops. “The constructions were undertaken keeping the accurate dimensions in mind. There have been no incidents of damage. All the roofs are of accurate heights,” says Prabhakar.
