Rahul Bose to pen a romantic comedy

Seems like filmmaker Rajiv Virani manages to get the writer out of Rahul Bose. The actor, after having written The Whisperers’ screenplay for him, is now working on a romantic comedy, which Virani will be directing.

Bose clarifies that the story idea is the director’s and that he is simply taking it forward. “Rajiv is a friend and while discussing the story, we couldn’t stop taking down notes so he suggested that I write the screenplay.”

However, the actor chooses to call the film an anti-romantic comedy. “The film speaks the language of the urban audiences of 2009 who are impatient, judgmental, sharp and get tired of anything more than six months old. The film is unlike what Indian cinema has seen to date.”

While it’s easy to presume that comedy is probably his calling, Bose refutes it. “Yes, comedy does come naturally to me but I wouldn’t write a romantic comedy when I’m making my own film - I personally am enticed by beautiful dark tales of love, passion, betrayal and friendship, like Boys Don’t Cry.”

He also points out that he has been maintaining a balance between comedy and serious films. “The Whisperers, which will release soon, isn’t a comedy and neither was Shaurya, which released in 2008. In fact, I have just returned from Kolkata after the release of Antaheen, a Bengali film with Aparna Sen and Sharmila Tagore.”
