Yadav, Verma get wild cards

Chandigarh, January 5 Mandeep Singh Yadav, Mandeep Singh Gill and Parul Verma have been given ‘local’ wild cards in the main draw of the ITF Junior (Grade 3) Tennis Tournament which began today with qualifying round in the boys under-18 singles at the CLTA Tennis Stadium in Sector 10 here today. Saurabh Singh, Vedant Kapoor and Kunal Anand are also the wild entrant in the main draw of 48.

Local girls Noor Paul, Shilpa Naruka, Iktesh Chahal and Prabhamrit Kaur grabbed wild card in the girls’ singls main draw of 48. Tanvi Gupta and Prerna Mythri Appineni will also figure in the main draw as wild cards.

According to CLTA chairman Rajan Kashyap, in the main draw which begins on Monday (January 7), 34 direct entries have been received. Besides two special exempt, six wild cards and six qualifiers would make the draw of 48 boys as well as girls singles. Five local boys, including Vijayant Malik and Shiva Sangwan and three wild card entrants will figure in the main draw. Malik, a CLTA Rural Scheme trainee, will be start bet of Chandigarh.

The organisers will provide full hospitality to all main draw players till they remain in the fray.

Today eight matches in the boys’ singles qualifying were played in a draw of 24. Six qualifiers would be spotted tomorrow.

Digvijay Singh Mehta and Shaolin of Chandigarh won their first round qualifying matches. Digvijay outplayed Subhash C. Rao 6-0 6-1, Chandom Shaloin beat Anubhav Chaudhary 6-1, 6-2.

Junjua (Ind) 6-3, 6-4, Polok Bhattacharya (Ind) bt Sidharth Rawat (Ind) 7-6 (3), 6-4.
