Kolkata The police on Friday evening arrested the driver of the pool car that used to ferry school children back home in connection with the kidnap and murder of seven-year-old Yash Lakhotia, the son of a Howrah businessman whose body was recovered on January 31, two days after he went missing while returning from school.

According to the police, Dharam Routh, the driver of the pool car, is under suspicion as he was 20 minutes late to pick up Yash from school on the day of the kidnapping on January 29 and cops say he might have timed it to help kidnappers.

“We have arrested Routh as we believe he was involved in the incident,” said Neeraj Kumar Singh, Howrah’s superintendent of police.

Samir Dey, additional public prosecutor, said, “He was 20 minutes late to pick up Yash. During investigation, it was revealed he was directly involved in the case and knew about the kidnapping plan. He also tried to mislead the police during his interrogation.”

The Howrah court remanded Routh to 10 days in police custody.

This is the second arrest in the case. On February 2, Ganesh Chaudhury, an employee of the Lakhotias, was arrested and was remanded in police custody for 10 days by a Howrah court.

Yash’s body was found in a drain at Foreshore Road, Howrah, on January 31. There were blood stains on his face and strangulation marks.

Yash, a Class II student at the MC Kejriwal School, was the only son of Anil Lakhotia, a Howrah-based builder and owner of a sweet shop in Howrah Maidan.

“Routh was 20 minutes late to reach the school, which was unusual. When he finally reached, Yash had already left the school and was seen with an unknown person,” said a police officer.
