New Delhi Squabbling policemen allegedly led to the death of a 22-year-old man, who had met with an accident in Patel Nagar area.

The deceased, identified as Vicky, was riding his motorcycle on Saturday night when he rammed into a tempo.

According to his family, officers of the Patel Nagar and Naraina police stations kept fighting over the jurisdiction of the accident spot while the victim lay bleeding.

“Instead of rushing the injured to a nearby hospital, policemen from Patel Nagar and Naraina kept arguing,” said Sonu, who was riding pillion on Vicky’s bike.

Senior police officers have, however, denied the allegations claiming the Patel Nagar police reached the spot immediately after receiving a call.

The incident occurred around 10 pm near the Satya Park police picket. Vicky, with two friends riding pillion, was heading towards Naraina.

“We did not find helmets at the spot, which suggests that they were not wearing any. Vicky sustained serious injuries and was rushed to nearby Jankidas Kapur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The other two were discharged after first aid,” police officers maintained.

Friends of the deceased who were with him when the accident took place, however, narrated a different story.

Sonu said that two policemen from the Satya Park police picket made a PCR call, after which four PCR vans reached the spot. All of them left saying the spot is not under their jurisdiction. The cops, he alleged, refused to take Vicky to the hospital.

“I informed my friends and family who then rushed us to Jankidas Kapur Hospital, where the doctors refused to admit Vicky saying it was a police case,” added Sonu.

When contacted, the hospital administration denied the allegations. “He was already dead when he was brought to our hospital. Some of the people accompanying Vicky seemed to be in an inebriated condition. I asked them to take the victim to a government hospital,” said the doctor on duty, on condition of anonymity

The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem examination at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Vicky worked in a call centre while his father, Subhash runs a provisional store in the area, the police said.

Human values by Senthil on 02 Mar 2009

POLICE behaving with no respect for human life is a daily activity nowadays.. And then I don't how long are people going to wait for a POLICE man to register a case before treating a poor bleeding man. It is absolutely frustrating that a man had to loose his life because of this. Only if these people face such a situation they understand the pain. There has to be some human values taught to these guys before you hand them a job.

DId he value his own life? by astrix91 on 02 Mar 2009

Vicky was wrong on all fronts - Three people on a two wheeler, not wearing helmet and perhaps under the influence of alcohol. Well if he did not value his life, why should others??????????

thats not for us to Judge by Salaam on 02 Mar 2009

I understand your point, however whether he valued his life or not is not for us to judge..the court systems are in place for that. But as fellow humans it is our responsibility to save life whenever where ever we can. Day by day it is getting too late to change the beauraucracy in India.

Very true by Dream Girl on 03 Mar 2009

I full agree with your point of view.

Is it really too late to change by astrix91 on 02 Mar 2009

I fully agree with you, human life is precious and my heartfelt condolences for the family of departed youth. I also feel very sad for sheer wastage of a young life but is it fair to blame everything on the system without looking into the total picture. I strongly feel the report here is too biased towards the deceased since it makes more sensational reading. Why are we not ready to believe the police and authorities and blindly accept everything told by 2 irresponsible persons. India has its problems but we must accept; we are an integral part of these problems. Why do we do things which are blatantly wrong and unlawful be it a small issue of triple riding or driving without helmet or driving under influence. It may be too late to change the beauraucracy but is it also too late to change ourselves?
