Mathura, February 3 A 16-year-old Australian girl was seriously injured when a local youth, Saurabh (23), allegedly shot her late on Friday night. He later committed suicide. They reportedly knew each other and were believed to be romantically involved.

Ananda Lila Zardi, in India on a tourist visa and living at a rented accommodation with her family, was rushed to Pankaj Apollo Hospital in Agra from where she was referred to Delhi. The police stated that her conditional is still critical.

“The picture will become clear once Lila recovers and is in a position to give her statement,” said Circle Officer of Mathura S Shekhar.

According to the police, Lila and her sister Chitamani Zardi and brother Madhu Zardi had been staying at a rented house in Pepsi building in Mathura since October 17.

On Friday night, a resident informed the police that Saurabh had committed suicide after shooting Lila.

The police team immediately rushed to the spot and found Lila lying injured near the dead body of the youth.

“The call details of both Shanu and Lila suggest that they knew each other. Shanu frequently visited Lila’s house,” said Arun Kumar Sharma, the inspector at the Kotwali.

He added that Saurabh used the revolver of his father Makhan Singh. Police have recovered the weapon along with several live cartridges from the spot. An officer of the Australian Embassy visited the spot to investigate the matter on Saturday.

The police said that Shanu is the nephew of former Uttar Pradesh minister Tejpal Singh.

Sources said Leela was a devotee of Lord Krishna and was studying in Australia. She often visited India and used to stay at Vrinadavan with her two brothers.
