Youth in suicide bid at Centre Street

Pune Sachin Pardeshi, a youth in late 20s residing at Centre Street in Pune Camp, tried to set himself ablaze due to alleged demands of Rs 10 lakh by Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) vice president Prasad Kedari to prevent sealing of his building. He was however overpowered by PCB's Nuisance Prevention Squad (NPS) members and nearby residents on Monday.

Speaking to media persons after the incident, Sachin that he had constructed the two-storey 1949 sq feet house two years ago, of which 200 sq feet on the second floor was illegal. “I had demolished all the illegal structures after it was sealed in 2008 and acquired the necessary clearances from the PCB. The present construction is legal and has been sanctioned by the PCB. However, Kedari is demanding money from me wrongly indicating that the structure is illegal," he said.

Pardeshi has now decided to sent a petition to the Chief of Army Staff Gen Deepak Kapoor, Union Defence Minister A K Antony and GOC in C, Southern Command, Lt Gen Pradeep Khanna about these happenings in Pune cantonment errant behaviour of the PCB members.

Kedari, however, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. His mobile was switched off.

Commenting on the issue, Parvati MLA Ramesh Bagwe also tried speak to Kedarit but could not reach him. PCB chief executive engineer K V Shirodkar said that the NPS personnel had gone to the reseal the structure as no order was issued to de-seal the structure.

Meanwhile, other PCB residents maintained that a few elected members have been illegally demanding money from them. The Pune Sub Area Headquarters had also issued show cause notices to a couple of members on charges of threatening cantonment residents and businessmen.
