Mumbai A 26-year-old resident of Alibaug was arrested late on Wednesday for murdering his grandmother. According to the Mira Road police, the accused, Sagar Pisekar, got into an argument with his 81-year-old grandmother Parvati over money that he wanted to borrow for setting up a shop.

Senior Police Inspector Mukund Mahajan from the Mira Road police station said, “According to the family, Sagar had been suffering from mental instability and was receiving psychiatric treatment for his illness.”

Sagar visited Parvati, who was unwell, along with his father, Dwarkanath on Tuesday morning. “Parvati was staying with her eldest son Manohar in Bhayander. When early on Wednesday, Dwarkanath was leaving for Alibaug after visiting his ailing mother, Sagar insisted on staying back.”

Later in the day, Manohar went to his office and his wife Vasanti went out to buy some grocery leaving Sagar behind in the house. When Vasanti was on her way back, she met Sagar who was going to Alibaug. On reaching home, Vasanti found Parvati’s body on the floor. She was stabbed on her chest and back with a sharp weapon. Vasanti immediately informed the police and her family members. Parvati was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Shashikant Mahavarkar said, “We knew that Sagar was a resident of Alibaug, so we sent out teams to trace him there. Finally, he was picked up on Thursday morning. The knife used for the murder and his blood-stained clothes were also recovered.”

Another official from the investigation team said, “From our investigation till now we have learnt that Parvati used to frequently shower gifts on Manohar and his son. When Sagar too demanded money to set up a shop, Parvati refused which made him furious and he stabbed her.”
