Why do so many young girls these days dream about such titles and beauty pageants?
It is the lure of the glamour world. So much of importance is attached to being glamorous that they sometimes tend to be what they are not and should not be.
What should they do then?
It is important to know about the traditional and cultural importance of one's place. That is precisely what helped me win this title as the knowledge of Punjab and it traditions was one of the parameters on which the contestants were judged.
How do you describe the youth of today?
We are a confused lot and often find ourselves direction-less. The reason is simple. There is a lack of traditional and cultural touch in our society. I travelled in various parts of Punjab and learnt so many interesting things about our culture. But the youngsters are going the Western way, which is not a healthy trend.
What is role of girls in keeping the cultural values intact and propagating them?
Unfortunately, the girls today do not give much important to the details of our traditions.
Those living in cities hardly pay any heed to what makes us 'Punjabis' and those living in the rural areas are so enamoured by the city life that they are always trying to be what they are not. But if we do not remember our traditions and cultural values, they will soon fade out as our progeny will be devoid of the rich cultural heritage. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the women to make their children rich with knowledge of their culture and traditions.
