Ahmedabad, February 16 In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old diploma engineer of Vinowa Bhave Nagar in Vatva GIDC set a girl on fire on Saturday, reportedly because her marriage had been fixed with someone else.

The victim, Chaya Rathod (17), who had sustained over 95 per cent burns in the incident, succumbed to her injuries at L G Hospital on Saturday evening. The victim's mother, Kusum Rathod (49), who was also injured while trying to save her daughter, is presently undergoing treatment. The police said she is now out of danger.

The incident took place at the girl's house in Vinzol Housing Board on Saturday morning. According to the police, the boy, Sanjay Patel, who stays in the same society, broke into the house around 11 am and doused Chaya with petrol after hurling abuses at her. He later set her on fire.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Patel was in love with Chaya and had even proposed to her several times. "Chaya, however, kept refusing on the grounds that she would marry the man of her parents' choice," Inspector D B Raulji said, adding that the girl's engagement was held last week. "When Patel came to know about the engagement, he decided to kill her," he said.

Based on the victim's dying declaration and her mother's statement, the police have booked Patel on charges of murder, even as the accused and his family members are absconding.
