Perhaps the first person to be booked in 2009 was Arvind Rohit, a resident of Zirakpur. He was arrested in Sector 22 and was booked for consuming liquor at a public place.
Strict provisions had been made across the city to maintain the law and order. Many police personnel were seen taking action against people trying to create a nuisance. “It will keep them under check and act as a deterrent for other miscreants,” a policeman deputed outside a disco said.
Most of those involved in brawls and scuffles, however, reached a compromise after police intervention.
In one such incident, some youths smashed the window of a car which was parked behind their vehicle. The police, however, immediately intervened and took them to the police station where they reached a compromise.
In another incident, a group of women from abroad were chased by nearly 150 youth at the Plaza in Sector 17. The police personnel deputed at the area, however, encircled the girls and dispersed the mob. No complaint was registered in the case.
Constable Balwan Singh, a traffic police officer, however, sustained injuries and was admitted in the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, after being hit by a speeding Tata Indigo (CH04E 3884) at the road-dividing Sector 9 and 10. A case of rash driving was registered against Inder Parkash Puri, the driver of the vehicle. He was arrested today and later released on bail.
