Guwahati,
April 14:
THE newly formed BJP-AGP alliance in Assam has decided to set up
a joint campaign and coordination committee to ensure its victory
in the coming state Assembly elections.
Making this
announcement here today, Sunil Shastri, BJP general secretary in
charge of Assam, said the decision was taken following a discussion
with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and
other senior leaders of the regional party. Joint campaign committees
with representatives of both parties would also be set up immediately
at constituency and district levels, he added.
Making it clear
that the BJP party workers were now clear
about the tie-up, Shastri said there was no hitch anywhere and that
things were moving in the right direction.
The BJP has
been allotted 44 out of 126 seats in this electoral tie-up which
was formalised last week. The AGP got 64, while the remaining seats
have been allotted to two other allies the All Bodo Students
Union (ABSU) and the Holiram Terang faction of the Autonomous State
Demand Committee (ASDC).
Shastri dismissed
reports that the partys Assam unit was on the verge of a split,
and added that protests by one or two ticket aspirants did not amount
to a revolt. There are always some people who complain
when they do not get party tickets, he said.
AGP general
secretary and former Union minister Birendra Prasad Baishya said
the alliance was all set to sweep the elections, since the anti-Congress
votes had been brought to one side by this understanding. The
two important tribal groups, the Bodos and Karbis will add to the
score, he said.
