Guwahati,
April 16: THE Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) became the first party
in the state to set the election process rolling by announcing its
first list of candidates. Fifty-four names have been announced.
Party president
and Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has retained the Barhampur
seat in Nagaon district but is likely to contest from the prestigious
Dispur seat as well.
Releasing the
first list, Mahanta said that the AGP will put up candidates in
79 seats, of which there will be friendly contests
with the BJP in as many as 10 seats. He, however, refused to divulge
the names of these
constituencies.
But going by
earlier reports, it has been found that the AGP has put up candidates
in Guwahati (West), Hajo, Teok and Palashbari constituencies
which have apparently been named in the list of constituencies meant
for friendly contest.
Party vice-presidents
and senior ministers Gunin Hazarika (Kaliabor), Nurul Hussain (Hajo),
Thaneswar Boro (Rangiya), general secretaries Chandra Mohan Patowari
(Dharmapur) and Pradip Hazarika (Amguri) have been renominated.
Mahanta claimed
that the new alliance comprising the AGP, the BJP, the All Bodo
Students Union (ABSU) and the Holiram Terang faction of the
ASDC will get an overwhelming majority and form a stable government.
