New Delhi,
April 21: TWO former chief ministers, several former state
ministers and late chief minister Hiteshwar Saikias wife found
berths on the delayed Congress list of nominees for the Assembly
polls.
Former chief
ministers Syeda Anwara Taimur and B.D. Barman, and Hemprabha Saikia
found a place in the list the Congress released tonight. PCC chief
Tarun Gogoi, however, was conspicuously missing.
He may yet
file nomination papers from the five seats that are still pending
of the total 126. The last date is April 23.
The list has
its share of surprises because several candidates have criminal
antecedents.
These candidates, recommended by the Pradesh Election Committee,
have been cleared by the partys central leadership thus giving
credence to the protests of some state unit leaders and party MPs.
Others on the
list are CLP leader Sylvius Candopan, former MPs Bhubaneswar Kalita
and Nripen Goswami, and former state ministers Gautam Roy and Dinesh
Prasad Gola. S.R. Subba, brother of Tezpur MP M.K. Subba, too has
found a place as has Jibantara Ghatowar, wife of incumbent MP Paban
Singh Ghatowar. Of all Congress candidates, 16 are women.
