Mahanta accepts verdict, resigns as Assam CM

Express News Service

Guwahati, May 14:
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, whose Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) suffered its worst- ever defeat in the Assembly elections, today resigned from chief ministership as the Congress continued to win seat after seat after crossing the magic figure of 63 on Sunday night.

‘‘I accept the verdict of the people. But I did not expect such a crushing defeat,’’ Mahanta told reporters immediately after he came out of Raj Bhavan at noon, completing the formalities of tendering his resignation of his government.

For Mahanta, it has come as big surprise that the regional party has been wiped out from its traditional bastions but he refused to comment on what led to such a disastrous performance.

The AGP and its allies have won 39 seats while Congress won 70 of the 124 seats declared so far.

Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of the AGP suffered a humiliating defeat in the prestigious Dispur Assembly constituency at the hands of Congress candidate Captain Robin Bordoloi. Mahanta finished a poor third behind his arch rival Atul Bora of Trinamul Gana Parishad.
