Barhampur, in
Nagaon district of Central Assam, is represented by AGP president
and Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
Mahanta first won the seat in 1991 defeating Ramesh Phukan (Cong)
by a margin of over 17,000 votes. In 1996, Mahanta won again defeating
Uma Phukan (Cong) by a margin of over 26,000 votes. This time Mahanta
is facing Chitralata Phukan, wife of Ramesh Phukan (who lost to
Mahanta in 1991). Incidentally, the constituency also has Uma Phukan
(Independent) who is the uncle of Ramesh Phukan.
While Mahanta is expected to win comfortably, the margin is expected
to increase as Uma Phukan could cut into the Congress votes. The
BJP votes will also add to the AGP votes, as the AGP and BJP are
now allies.
