Held by Biraj
Kumar Sharma, AGP vice-president, Minister for Municipal Administration
in Mahanta government. Sharma won the seat in 1985, lost to Citta
Ranjan Patowari (Cong) in 1991 and won it back in 1996.
Sharma, as chief convenor of the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad
(AAGSP), was a signatory to the 1985 Assam Accord alongwith then
AASU president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and general secretary Bhrigu
Kumar Phukan. He was also a minister in the Mahanta government of
1985-90.
Sharma is now candidate of the AGP-BJP alliance. But he is facing
a tough challenge from Pankaj Bora, general secretary and spokesperson
of the Congress. Bora, a better speaker, won prize in debates during
his college days. Bora had in 1991 contested as Congress (S) candidate,
coming second with 9668 votes (15.19 per cent).
Sharma on the other hand is personally known to almost every voter
in the constituency. He is always available to the people, often
becoming "ghar ka murgi, daal barabar." His constituency
has all the important newspaper houses, the Nehru Stadium and three
major cremation grounds, of the Hindus, Muslims as well as Christians.
And he regularly visits them to express condolence for the dead.
