Jorhat is the
most prestigious Assembly constituency in Upper Assam, especially
for the AGP. It has been under the control of the regional party
since 1985, when the AGP came into existence.
In 1985, the party's MLA from Jorhat was Abhijit Sharma, who later
joined the NAGP of Bhrigu Kumar Phukan to lose the seat to Hitendra
Nath Goswami of the AGP in 1991. For the last two terms it has been
held by Goswami.
This time, Goswami was under threat from veteran politician and
former state JD president Dulal Barua after the latter joined the
BJP. But with the AGP-BJP alliance coming through and the alliance
shifting Barua to the adjacent constituency of Teok, Goswami appears
to be safe.
The Congress has fielded Padma Sharma at Jorhat, but he is not
a strong candidate.
