KOLKATA, JUNE 14: The CPI(M) on Monday alleged that the Congress took the help of Muslim fundamentalists to win the Murshidabad and Jangipur in north Bengal, during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Jangipur is represented by Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who for the first time in his political career, had won a Lok Sabha election.

Anil Biswas, CPI(M) Politburo member said after the party’s state committee meeting. ‘‘The Congress on different occasions has built up alliances with communal forces, for their own interest. We condemn this,’’ Biswas said.

Mukherjee had brought in Jamat-e-Ulema-e-Hind leader Siddiqulah Chaudhury to campaign for him in Jangipur, a Muslim-dominated area.
