Express News Service

Kochi, May 4: The Kerala High Court today asked advocate K. Radhakrishnan, counsel for the Election Commission, to inform the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala to treat Cherthala, Thiruvananthapuram and Ambalappuzha as sensitive areas along with northern Kerala and to take adequate measures for the conduct of a free and fair election there.

The direction was issued by Justice M. Ramachandran while closing six writ petitions filed by United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates contesting elections from Thiruvananthapuram West, Kannur, Alappuzha, Chadayamangalam, Kayamkulam and Chittur asking the concerned authorities to take adequate measures including deployment of central forces during the polls.

The writ petitions filed by Communist Marxist Party leader M.V. Raghavan, Congress leader Prayar Gopalakrishnan and others were closed after recording a statement filed on behalf of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) recounting the adequate and effective security measures for the conduct of proper polls.

According to the CEO, adequate police force has been deployed throughout the state and 30 companies of central paramilitary forces and 14,000 special police officers have also been deployed .
