Surjeet changes tack on Cong across borders

Express News Service

Thiruvananthapuram, May 8: CPI(M) general-secretary H.S. Surjeet’s stand on the Congress kept changing according to ground realities in the last leg of his campaign in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

At his virulent best attacking the Congress at Parassuvickkal, a couple of hours later in his address at Marthandam, 10 km away across the border, Surjeet was silent on the Congress. At the rally on Monday for CPI(M)’s Parassala candidate R. Selvaraj, Surjeet charged the Congress with resorting to anti-democratic measures since 1957.

He cited the dismissal of the EMS ministry as an undemocratic act of that party. He alleged the Congress had aligned with communal parties such as PDP and had a tacit understanding with the BJP to defeat the LDF in the ensuing polls.

Once the CPI(M) leader entered Tamil Nadu, the tone and tenor of his speech changed. At the crowded meetings for candidates D. Mani and J. Hemachandran in Marthandam and Kulasekaram, Surjeet’s main targets were the NDA government and M. Karunanidhi.
