CPI
to contest two seats in Pondy
Pondicherry:
the CPI, a constituent of the secular front comprising of Congress,
TMC and other parties, which has been alloted three seats will be
contesting two constituencies in the forthcoming polls.
Nara Kalainathan,
secretary of the Pondicherry unit of CPI, said that the sitting
MLA and the National Council Member, R.Viswanathan would be contesting
from the Reddiarpalayam constituency and A.Abdul Rachide will be
its nominee from Bussy constituency. CPI has decided against fielding
any candidate from Nellithope constituency which has also been allocated
to the party. A decision on whom to support or whether to surrender
it to any other ally to contest would be taken later.
Former Chief
Minister and DMK nominee, R.V Janakiraman has been elected from
the constituency for the past four elections. The CPI which last
contested the constituency in 1980 and won only 13.52 percent votes
has never contested the constituency till now. It is understood
that the CPI is not finding it worth to contest the constituency.
Though CPI had
desired the Mudaliarpet constituency which has been a seating seat
of the party, Kalainathan has said that to keep the secular front
together the compromise has been made. The Bussy constituency which
the Congress retained in the last Assembly elections has been given
to the CPI where its candidate Abdul Rachide lost to the C.M Achraff
of the Congress. From the time the Congress formed an electoral
alliance with the AIADMK in 1985, the Nellithope constituency was
contested by AIADMK in all elections thereafter. With the AIADMK
and Congress forming separate alliances this election, the Nellithope
constituency became the least desired constituency by any of the
allies in the Congress-led front.
