Chidambaram’s poser on Jaya

Express News Sevice

Tiruchi, May 3: Communist leaders R. Nallakannu and N. Sankariah and TMC leader G.K. Moopanar should explain how they have accepted AIADMK leader Jayalalitha’s frequent statement that she would be the front’s chief ministerial candidate in the wake of her court conviction, TMC Democratic Forum leader P. Chidambaram said today.

Stating that the legal debate over this issue was unnecessary, he said that Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill’s word should be accepted as final. Jayalalitha should approach the courts if she has any grievances.

Regretting the poor quality of debate in the current poll campaign, Chidambaram said while DMK leader Kaurnanidhi — except for a few days — had only spoken of his party’s plans for the future if called to form the government, Jayalalitha had followed only a single point: her Karunanidhi-bashing programme. Her ‘‘single-minded focus’’ was only on herself and her future and not about good governance, he said. Elections were not about votes alone, but also included progress and development.

Asked about Jayalalitha not talking about BJP in her poll campaign meetings, Chidambaram said the AIADMK chief had no faith in secular or non-secular terminology. Her front was termed secular only for the sake of Communist parties allied with her. The AIADMK front had accommodated only three Muslim candidates while the TN NDA front had accommodated nine Muslim candidates, he pointed out.

Referring to Union Urban Minister Venkaiah Naidu’s recent statement that the TMC would disappear after the polls, Chidambaram said no party would disappear because of one mistake. The TMC will make a comeback, he said.

On huge crowds attending Jayalalitha’s meetings, he said people coming to listen to the speakers’ arguments was welcome but it was questionable whether such turnouts would convert into votes.
On the BJP’s communal nature, Chidambaram said the party consisted of both secular and non-secular units such as the RSS, Bajrang Dal and the VHP. ‘‘Judge BJP by what it does,’’ he said.
