Polling concludes peacefully in TN, 55 per cent voter turnout

Chennai, May 10: A little over 55 per cent of the 4.75 crore voters in Tamil Nadu exercised their franchise during the nine-hour polling in the 234 constituencies in the state which officially came to an end at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Polling was peaceful by and large except for some sporadic incidents of road roko, stabbing and gheraoing of a state minister. Polling was also peaceful in Tiruchirappalli by-election to the Lok sabha. The vacancy was caused by the death of Union power minister Rangarajan Kumaramangalam in August last.

Prominent among those who cast their votes were state Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha, BJP President Jana Krishnamurthy and Tamil film super star Rajni Kanth.

Elsewhere in the state, several DMK ministers, former ministers and leaders of various political parties cast their votes in their native places.

A total of 1857 candidates, including 104 women, are in the fray for the Assembly polls.

For the first time, electronic voting machines were used in all the 234 Assembly constituencies and the Tiruchirappalli Lok sabha constituency.(PTI)
