Handicraft exports up by 13.02%

NEW DELHI, May 7: India's handicrafts exports achieved a turnover of Rs
5,628.62 crore in the 1996-97 fiscal compared to Rs 4,980.15 crore in the
previous year, posting a growth of 13.02 per cent.
This information was given by textiles minister RL Jalappa, while speaking
at the consultative committee meeting for his ministry on Tuesday.
He said a renewed thrust was being made during the Ninth Plan to further
strengthen the existing schemes with special emphasis on generation of more
employment and welfare of artisans as well as upgradation of their skills.
Jalappa said that a number of schemes would be taken up during the plan
which include advanced training to master carftspersons, supply of modern
tools to artisans, conducting design workshops through carafts colleges and
other professional institutes like the national institute of designs,
national institute of fashion technology etc.
Keeping in view the tremendous export potential in this sector, Jalappa said
that all efforts would be made to encourage exports. He stated that to
sustain and grow in the international market, particularly in view of the
new techniques being introduced to enlarge the production base in other
countrties, India has now established a metal handicraft service centre at
Moradabad with UNDP assistance.
Another project, design and marketing of jute-based handicrafts, also with
UNDP assistance was under implementation.
He said efforts were being made to promote exports of embroidered goods,
zari and zari goods, imitation and costume jewellery, besides exploring new
markets and export promotion crafts like fashion accesories, tablewares.
Members unanimously stressed the need for strengthening the training of
craftsmen and artisans keeping in view the fast changing market conditions.
