14-day T-bills to be routed via auctions

The Reserve Bank of India is set to introduce 14-day treasury bills through auctions. The paper will qualify for repo facilities. The 14-day instrument, like the 91-day T-bill, will have a notified amount. Auctions for the instrument are likely to be held every Friday. The notified amount will vary with each auction depending on the liquidity in the money market.

Chidambaram hints at white paper on state borrowing

Union finance minister P Chidambaram hinted at the possibility of the finance ministry coming out with a white paper on government borrowing. He stated that he would consider the demand of BJP member and former minister of state for finance, Satish Agarwal, in this regard and inform the house whether it was possible to come out with a white paper on borrowing.

Public sector banks exceed priority sector target

The public sector banks have exceeded their priority sector advance targets. A Reserve Bank release said yesterday the banks have surpassed the targets as on end-September 1996, and that the trend has been continuing. The public sector banks as a group have exceeded their priority sector targets and extended Rs 73,654 crore, constituting 41.12% of the net bank credit.
