Whatever the Central Bureau of Investigation has pieced together from the volley of evidence of a fraud in the Bofors gun deal is still a matter of speculation. Its voluminous report that can form the basis of a charge-sheet is ready and awaits clearance by the government. It is likely to be a long wait.

After weeks of political tension, the nation's focus is on economics. Apart from fiscal policy broadly, some thought is being given to management of subsidies, with the Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, coming out with a white paper to facilitate a public debate on various issues.

Conserve and develop

Ecological conservation is viewed suspiciously by many in spite of the fact that India still remains essentially an agricultural economy. One can hardly hope for adequate rainfall without a proper environment. Industrialists set up food-processing units least realising that with a damaged environment, there will be no fruit and vegetables to process.
