[Details] After weeks of political tension, the nation's focus is on economics. Apart from fiscal policy broadly, some thought is being given to management of subsidies, with the Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, coming out with a white paper to facilitate a public debate on various issues.

[Details] Ecological conservation is viewed suspiciously by many in spite of the fact that India still remains essentially an agricultural economy. One can hardly hope for adequate rainfall without a proper environment. Industrialists set up food-processing units least realising that with a damaged environment, there will be no fruit and vegetables to process.
