MoF, the fountainhead of scams

[Details] A recent lead story in a business daily speculates at length on whether SEBI chairman D.R.Mehta is going to be made a scapegoat for the CRB Caps collapse. The basic thrust of the story is simple: the ministry is having second thoughts on retaining Mehta as Sebi chief; the Union finance minister himself is quoted as having expressed his unhappiness with Mehta's report card.

Governance by the market

[Details] The Egon on Zahnder survey on corporate governance in India clearly reveals that despite all the hi-falutin' talk on introducing corporate best practices in the country, companies are apt to take a much more hard-headed view on the subject in private. The CII may publish model codes galore, but the same corporate chieftains who make up that august body seem to be rather sceptical about the actual impact of such models of governance.

[Details] Projections of a tenth successive good monsoon imply that at least climatic factors will not intervene with the continued revival of agricultural output. Much will depend upon the distribution and timing of the rains, as even a "normal" monsoon saw lower agricultural output in 1995-96.
