MTNL has a flying head-start

The telecom privatisation programme may have got its wires crossed. However, the government-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), the basic telephone service provider in the metropolises of New Delhi and Mumbai, has not waited for private sector competition to come through.

Murky but not hopeless

Expectations that last year's modest decline in the growth of industrial production will see a reversal this year are giving way to scepticism. The new fiscal year started with a fairly handsome credit expansion to business and industry.
